Sealants
What are Sealants?
Sealants are beneficial in that they help to protect your teeth against decay. The back teeth are more susceptible to decay because of the deep grooves and fissures that are present in these areas. In order to prevent these teeth from becoming severely decayed, we can apply a thin clear layer of sealant to fill in the cracks and fissures. Sealants can last for anywhere from one to three years depending on how much wear they receive.
Why are Sealants needed?
You might need or want sealants because you have deep fissures and cracks on your back teeth. You might be more prone to decay and already have a lot of fillings because of it. You or your child can benefit from having sealants placed. These clear coatings are virtually invisible and can be replaced as often as they are needed.
Who is a candidate for Sealants?
There is absolutely no age limit when it comes to who would benefit from sealants. Children are often more susceptible to decay, so it makes sense that sealants can protect their vulnerable teeth. However, even adults can benefit from sealants and regularly have them placed. If you had sealants applied years ago and they’ve worn away, we can easily replace them in our office.
What happens during the Sealant procedure?
We begin by cleaning and then drying all of the back teeth. We will then brush clear liquid sealant onto the chewing surfaces only. These sealants are then cured with a bright dental light so that they remain in place. Sealants dry on clear and will wear away in about one to three years. If your sealants have worn away, we can reapply them as often as they are needed. Our goal is to protect your smile in a way that is beneficial to your future oral health needs. Sealants require no anesthetic or invasive treatment in order to place.
