Who is a good candidate for Dental Implants?
Implants can completely transform the way that your smile looks. Rather than wear a prosthetic appliance or having to compromise other teeth for a bridge, the implant works on its own to replace just what you’re missing. Implants are made of titanium, so they can withstand the daily pressure and force that is involved with eating, chewing and even grinding your teeth.
What are Dental Implants?
Implants work with your body to improve the look of your smile. During a quick, simple surgical procedure, the implant is embedded into the jawbone. After several months, the implant will bond and fuse with the actual bone during a process known as osseo integration. This ensures that the implant is securely and stably in place. The implant will then act as the foundation for other restorations like crowns, dentures and bridge work.
Who is a Good Candidate for Implants?
Most people who either need or want a new implant can safely have the procedure done in our office. However, in order for implants to fuse and heal properly, you need healthy and solid bone structure in the area where they’re being placed. We will take x-rays to determine if you can have implants placed. If you are missing bone, we may recommend that you have a bone grafting done to build up the area and improve the chances of the implant healing correctly. Likewise, if you have low-lying sinuses, we may recommend a sinus lift for implants placed on the upper jaw.
The procedure involves undergoing sedation in order to place the new implant. Because of this, you should be healthy enough to undergo the procedure and have the ability to heal from it after it has been completed. You will need to come in regularly after surgery so that we can check on the implant to make sure it is healing correctly. Once it has healed, we’ll create a specially-made restoration that fits over the top of it. You can expect the implant itself to last a lifetime once it’s been given time to heal. You can benefit from the fact that your smile will be full and healthy for life, and that you’ve chosen a restorative option that doesn’t involve damaging any surrounding teeth.
